NEXT STEPS

We are all moving in a direction: some of us with a lot of purpose, while others are still trying to figure things out. All of us have a NEXT STEP in our spiritual journey — whether we are just learning about Jesus or have attended church all our life. Wondering what is your next step? We’d love to help you figure that out and either take a step to grow toward faith or grow in faith.

Church Membership Classes

Have you been attending Bethel and want to know how to become a member? Do you want to publicly profess your faith in Jesus Christ but aren’t sure how to do that at Bethel? Have you transferred your membership from another church and wonder what’s the same & what’s different? Or have you been a member for a long time but would like a refresher on what that means?
Simon and Shirley Feddema will be leading a group starting the last week of September 2022 which explores those questions. Please email, text or phone them if you’re interested – Simon: simon.feddema@gmail.com; 905-877-2790; or Shirley: sfeddema1@gmail.com; 905-965-0201. If this fall doesn’t work for you, it will be offered in the spring as well.

CONNECT WITH BETHEL

We have opportunities from being introduced to Bethel to looking to join as a member.

Discover Bethel

Are you new at Bethel? Want to know more about our church? Join us for an opportunity to learn more about Bethel in an informal setting with refreshments. Our primary purpose is to answer your questions. An overview of our mission and ministries will be provided, combined with a short building tour, and an opportunity to connect personally with some of our church leadership. Discover Bethel is offered every two months at 11:30am on Sunday, after our worship service, the next to be at a date to be determined.

Contact us at info@actoncrc.com to sign up or to ask any questions.

Explore Bethel

Over three sessions we provide the opportunity to explore who we are, what we believe, and how we do ministry as Bethel Church and the Christian Reformed denomination of which we are a part.  Participating in Explore Bethel  provides a no-obligation opportunity to consider membership in Bethel Church. Please contact us at info@actoncrc.com to indicate interest and find out when the next Explore Bethel group will be offered.

CHOOSE COMMUNITY

We have groups available for everyone. Regardless of your stage of life, there’s a group for you.

Join a Small Group

What is a small group? It’s pretty much just like it sounds – a smaller group of people  that get together on a regular basis to do life together – to connect.

There are 59 passages in the New Testament that talk about “one another” or “each other.”  For example, Mark 9:50 says “…and be at peace with each other.” John 13:34 says, “A new command I give you: Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

Small Group is where we can learn to do that in community.  Most small groups have an element of Bible Study, whether that is a particular book of the Bible or a topic; an element of fellowship; and an element of service to our community.

Some groups are formed based on stage of life (e.g. in their 20’s and just starting careers and navigating through that; some who have young families; etc.); some who want to study the same material; some that are more of a support group (e.g. adoption); and some are based on location – close to home.

We encourage you to become involved with a small group as soon as possible.  It’s a way to grow in your knowledge and love of God.  It’s a place to care for others and be cared for as well. It’s a place to serve – whether that’s helping with a community dinner, creating a float for a parade, visiting the lonely – the list is only limited by imagination.

If you’re interested in more details or would like to join or start a group, please contact our Community Life Coordinator at communitylife@actoncrc.com or 519-853-2121 x5.

Join a Mission

Bethel’s motto is “Shining Light, Showing Love.” We do that in our local community and we support those who do that world-wide.  You are invited to provide prayer, support, encouragement, finances and potentially time and travel, to these opportunities and more:

  1. World Renew – We are working toward a longer term commitment (3-5 years) with World Renew in Haiti. The teams will be going to Haiti to help, but also to learn. Part of mission work is staying here and praying. https://worldrenew.net/haiti
  2. Karen Lubbers – we support the work Karen does in Uganda.
  3. Impact Zambia – Lianti Muller takes teams to Zambia to help with a training centre and mission work.
  4. Water Mission International – Walk for Water is held in September to raise funds for wells and water treatment systems around the world.
  5. Ontario Christian Gleaners – take surplus food and turn it into soup that is dehydrated and sent to places in the world where food is scarce.

These are not the only organizations we support. Each week there is an offering for a specific organization, which is one way to support them.  Find your passion and work with others to be God’s hands, feet and heart in our world.

GET INVOLVED

If you are ready to get involved, there’s no better time than now. We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for you to try out.

Weekly

These opportunities happen every week, either year-round, or for a few months.

Food4Life – Every Thursday morning, usually between 9:00 and 10:00 am, a Food4Life truck comes to our parking lot. It is filled with food that has been donated by grocery store. Our team loads the food into bags and delivers it to local families who need a hand. It’s not all work and no play. Often the people sorting and delivering meet at McDonald’s for a coffee to refuel! Richard van der Wal and Oscar Feenstra are the coordinators and they are always glad to have helping hands.

Seasonal

These opportunities are usually once or twice per year and are great ways to get involved whether you have very little or lots of time to give.

Food Drive – the GEMS, Cadets and Scouts go out into the community to collect food that is sorted here at Bethel in the basement, then taken to Acton Foodshare. It is a blessing to the community.

Vacation Bible School (VBS) – One week in the summer, we are privileged to host approximately 200 children. This takes over 100 volunteers, from leading a group of children, helping with crafts, helping with sports activities, snacks, etc. It’s a high-energy week – exhausting yet exhilarating!

Every November on the Saturday after Remembrance Day, the Acton Firefighters host the Santa Claus Parade. For the last number of years Bethel has entered a float. If you are creative and like to come up with ideas that fit with the theme, or if you’d like to come out for an evening to help put it together, your skills are needed!

Community Cleanup – Each spring and fall the Deacons coordinate a community cleanup. They find people who need a little extra help with their yard, invite people to roll up their sleeves, and bless people in our community – primarily seniors – with a clean yard, clean windows and clean eaves troughs. Look for notices in the bulletin or on the website. Many hands make light work!

We also encourage you to volunteer in the community. Take a look at your local community’s website and there are sure to be opportunities where you can make a difference in someone’s life. If you would like some direction on that, please connect with our Community Life Coordinator.
